Seattle: Day 4

The itinerary of our last day in Seattle is a process of triage; once the possibilities were endless and now we’ve got one more hike, one more dinner, one more hang. I think we made good choices. But of course I would say that; we started with donuts!

Seattle isn’t unique in that it is defined by a much larger area than its city limits, but the variety and beauty and nearness of its surroundings are quite special. We explored a little of that today with a fast and efficient car ferry trip to Whidbey Island. It’s kind of the like the Norway to Seattle’s Europe, geographically speaking — a long finger of an island that points back to the mainland. It’s also sparsely populated with vacation towns like you’d see in a rom-com and lines for chowder too long to abide. Also lush wilderness and a hike under a cedar canopy to protect from that PNW precipitation. And don’t skip the wild salmonberries lining the trail. Rosie was particularly inspired and she’s especially proud of some of the photos she took on this hike.

We’re next to the ocean. It stands to reason that the fish oughtta be pretty good, hence my non-negotiable request for sushi. My wish was fulfilled in Fremont, and the fish was indeed excellent. Rosie and I have eaten a lot of sushi in our time together, and we both agreed that this was the best fish that we’ve ever had. Rosie also agreed that sake is delicious.

Fremont was yet another opportunity for us to daydream about uprooting ourselves for the northwest, and we strolled around the commercial district for a while, finding fantastic gelato just around the corner. We admired the skies and what we are told was a typically amazing sunset before returning to our rental and beginning to pack again. Tomorrow morning we’ll be back on the road east.
