Salt Lake City to The Dalles

Today was a travel day, headed west. For the first time in a while, there were no sights we planned to see, no hikes we planned to hike. We had a campsite booked purely based on its convenient location, but when we got there it did not meet our standards and we got back on the road.

They’re good standards! There were these little spiky things all over, like burrs that are designed to hurt rather than transport. I stuck my thumb with one while setting up the tent and it’s still sore!! Georgia’s paws deserve better. Also it was windy and getting windier. And the campsites were about 10 feet wide with basically no trees anywhere. Yeah, we could’ve stayed. But we didn’t want to, and we didn’t have to!

Plus, when you drive late you get to eat dinner out :)

Since we were headed west, two things were true: 1) there was a headwind the whole way (and has been basically this whole trip) and 2) we were looking at the setting sun over the Columbia River for much of the drive. Gorgeous.

We saw Mt. Hood but only from a distance through a windshield. Expect some excellent photos tomorrow, as Rosie has a good hike picked out for us. Our campsite for tomorrow night is only about 20 miles away, so we’ll be out of the car most of the day. Can’t wait, as we’re over 84 hours driving at this point, and last night we crossed 100 gallons of gas used.
