It rained all night. Thundered too, but calmed over the lake and just gave us a very insistent spattering on the rain fly until about 8am. The tent held up fine, even with my jury-rigged wooden stick stakes (apparently I had cannibalized this tent previously and forgotten about it) and we suffered no moisture related complaints. Slept very poorly nonetheless. In the morning, all seating was wet, so Rosie stayed in the tent. And more rain was rolling in as we finished our coffee.
So we packed up the wet tent and our wet clothes (much wetter than when we had hung them to dry) and left, not really sure where to. This was our first night in the tent! Bummer it went poorly. We have plenty more ahead.
On the way out, we stopped at the scenic vista. We hardly noticed the rainfall that was increasing in intensity; it really is that beautiful out there. We took photos of each other taking it in. Georgia, being a poor photographer, appears in both versions.
We decided to maybe drive to Sioux Falls, SD, maybe further, but whatever we did we needed to stop at Scheel’s again to get some tent stakes and more fuel for the stove. On the way there we passed the biggest catfish in the world, maybe. Naturally we at our lunches beneath it.
The vibe was not good at Scheel’s this time. The stuff was all there, but the energy was totally different. It was probably the ferris wheel in the middle of the store? Or the stuffed grizzly.
Anyway all the campgrounds near Sioux Falls and Sioux City were fully booked somehow, so we just drove to Omaha. We’ve been in the car for more than 30 hours of our first 5 days — can’t wait to slow it down a little. We’re planning a stop in Kansas tomorrow and then a couple of nights in Colorado.
