We made it! 4 full days spent in the car; 5000 miles driven so far. And today we reached the ocean — pacifically, the specific ocean. The road there was picturesque (“lush”) and winding, like the best parts of Ohio but better, full of blooms and orchards and mountains. The rhododendron here grows huge and flowers abundantly in all shades of red and pink.
When we arrived at Cape Lookout, it was too early to check into the campground. So we plugged our car into the free charger and walked down the beach. We went further than we planned, but it was just so beautiful we felt compelled. The sea mist settled around us and soon we couldn’t see the families playing behind us. We marveled at the sea shells — mostly all too broken to make good souvenirs. We kept Georgia from eating the sea life that had washed ashore (barnacles, seriously??). We had arrived at low tide and as we walked we saw the tide pools start to fill as high tide returned.
We went into town for groceries, and then we checked into yet another beautiful campsite just yards from our earlier walk. After a peaceful evening by the fire and a delicious camp dinner, we settled in for a night of sleep in the best weather you could ask for.
